Schloss Trakošćan und Museum des Neandertalers

Visit Trakošćan Castle, the most attractive castle in Croatia, located in Zagorje, 23 km northeast of Krapina. Built in the 13th century as a small fortress, it was part of the Zagorje principality. Since 1953, the castle has housed a permanent exhibition of the reconstructed ambiance of the Drašković family, featuring original Baroque furniture and small objects, allowing you to feel as if the owners have just left the castle. Next, head to the Krapina Neanderthal Museum, one of the most famous and important discoveries of prehistoric people in Europe. The museum, opened in 2010, offers an intriguing representation of human evolution, taking you on a journey from the beginning of cosmic evolution to modern times. The highlight is a hyper-realistic reconstruction of a Stone Age habitat, created by sculptor Elisabeth Daynes. The museum was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award in 2012.
